" The heir apparent to Hendrik Lundqvist’s throne in the Big Apple has continued to dominate the KHL, albeit as the backstop for one of the league’s most overwhelmingly stacked teams. Shesterkin is said to be under contract with SKA St. Petersburg until the conclusion of the 2018-19 campaign at which time you can be certain that the Rangers would make a play to bring him to North America. There have also been rumors of a buyout clause in the 22-year-old’s contract, though it’s not certain the Rangers would attempt to exercise it while the team takes their first step into a transitional period. As MSG analyst and former NHL goaltender Steve Valiquette notes, the KHL is a different animal in terms of goaltending, “they play a different brand of hockey, very east to west… he’s not required to cover rebounds the same way.” In Shesterkin’s defense of the topic, Ranger’s European scout, Nickolai Bobrov has made the comment that the young star “Is mature beyond his years and is a proven big game player. His best attributes are his ability to read the play, stay composed, and control rebounds.” We’ll likely find out within the next two years whether or not the change of style will have an effect on the Russian’s trajectory – if not, we could very well be looking squarely at the Rangers next franchise netminder.- Brayden Olafson, June 2018.

" The young Swedish goalie was having a rough season for HV71 (though, he set himself up with a tough act to follow from 2016-17) and that season may be over as a result of shoulder surgery. There isn’t an exact timetable for his return and shoulder injuries at any position are always very dicey. If he does return this season, it may not be at full strength.- Michael Farkas, January 2018.

" The New York Islanders signed their 2018 draftee to a three-year, entry-level contract on July 5th. The 18-year-old had a .912 save percentage and 2.41 goals-against average last campaign in 21 games playing in the Czech league. Despite poor international numbers, Jakub Skarek was widely considered to be the best goaltender at the draft. After having completed three days at the Islanders rookie camp this week, Skarek will return to Finland joining his new team the Lahti Pelicans of the Liiga on a two-year deal. Skarek’s role models are Sergei Bobrovsky and Andrei Vasilevskiy; he states his dream is to follow their examples and become a starter in the NHL. " - Jesse Sherman, September 2018.

" With Kahkonen’s rights expiring this June, the Wild decided to sign Kahkonen to a two-year entry level deal. Kahkonen has been a solid .920 goaltender in a good men’s league for two years and should slot in nicely on Iowa next season. He’s a tall, athletic goalie who will need some time to adjust to the smaller ice but his upside is there. With Minnesota’s weak goalie pipeline, Kahkonen will be given every opportunity over the next two seasons to leave a mark on Minnesota’s new management. Will Scouch- Will Scouch, May 2018.

He is the 1B on one of the good KHL teams, but like most KHL teams they value experience and as good as Samsonov has been he still takes a back seat to the veteran starter. He has already informed the Capitals that he will come play in North Amrica for the 2018-2019 season, and is fine developing in the AHL as long as he gets playing time. "

Although many armchair GMs have been clammering for Demko to take the reigns in Vancouver this year, preseason action has shown that the 22-year-old isn’t quite there yet. The plan remains in place. Demko will shoulder the load on a very strong Utica Comets’ squad in 2018-19. That will be far more valuable than seeing a fraction of the time as an NHL backup. He should assume the backup/platoon role in 2019-20 before truly pushing for the top spot the following season. However, if Jacob Markstrom were to suffer a long-term injury, Demko could see significant time on the big club and may even get a chance to run with it. Until then though, he remains a high-end prospect and one to target in keeper leagues. " - Cam Robinson, September 2018.

DiPietro finished his third OHL campaign as the league leader in shutouts with seven and ranked within the top 10 in wins (29), saves (1544), goals-against average (2.79) and save percentage (0.910). The 18-year-old has been everything for the Spitfires this season, especially after the team gutted it’s roster of all their other pieces in order to begin the rebuilding process. DiPietro has continued his dominance in the early going of the post-season as he’s backstopped the team to a 2-2 series tie against the favoured Sarnia Sting thus far on the back of a .950 save percentage. It’s almost assured that the Canucks’ third round pick will be dealt to an OHL contender at some point over the course of the next eight months and his price will be extremely high. The Avalanche have selected Annunen with their second pick of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. This is a bit higher than most expected, as he was ranked in the 100 range by most draft speculators. Annunen is a huge body and still growing, so size is not a worry for the Finn and he will always have this as an advantage. His numbers in the Finnish Juniors don’t jump off the page, but he hopes to get some major-league experience next season to continue his development. Expect him to remain in Europe for a few years – do not fantasy draft until he’s proven himself further. " - Hayden Soboleski, June 2018.

" The Predators are battling against the Penguins in one of the best Playoff Final series that I have seen. In game two of the series, the Penguins chased Nashville's starting goalie Pekka Rinne to the bench. The rookie goalie Saros got his first NHL Playoff game experience. He didn't get the win but he didn't surrender any additional goals, although Saros faced only two shots, but looked calm and poised for the 16:02 that he was out there, between the pipes. The 22-year-old Finn isn't the tallest of goalies, but still he managed to post some impressive numbers for a rookie, during the regular season. He had .923 save percentage and 2.35 goals against average, in 21 games played. Out of those 21 starts, 10 were wins, with one shutout. His quality starts percentage was .650 (> 60% good, < 50% bad, 53% league average). There was only one really bad start, where he posted a save percentage below .850. After a long Playoff run, and maybe even a summer filled with chanpionship celebrating, Saros will keep Rinne fresh during next regular season. They rotated mostly on back-to-backs this season, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Saros starting ore games next season. There is still one year left on Saros ELC-contract, at $692,500 cap hit. Rinne has two more years at $7,000,000 before becoming an UFA. He will be 36 years old when that happens. I would assume that the torch is going to get passed from Rinne to Saros, during the next couple of seasons. I would love to see Rinne and Saros switching roles, but still staying together as the Predators goalie tandem. Rinne and Saros are both from Finland and have an excellent mentor-protégé relationship. Saros stayed at Rinne's house during training camp and Rinne let Saros drive the car to the rink. It's good for Saros to have Rinne in his corner as the changing of the guard happens, slowly but surely. - Niko Salinen, June 2017.

Upon his return to Tucson after his recall to Arizona, where he notched his first-ever NHL win making 34 saves in a 4-3 shootout victory over the Los Angeles Kings, Hill was downright stellar. He finished the regular season playing arguably the best hockey of his career, posting a 5-1-1 record with three shutouts in eight starts leading up to the postseason. Entering the playoff’s, Hill was tabbed as Tucson’s starter, playing all nine postseason games.  Hill set the tone in Game 1 against San Jose, stopping 36 of 38 shots with Tucson winning 4-2. Hill shut out San Jose in Games 3 and 4, and the Roadrunners won the series. He posted an impressive streak of 176:48 without allowing a goal at one point. Round two was a little more difficult for Hill and his teammates, as Tucson ended up losing the series to Texas in five games. Hill still boasted good numbers though with a 2.12 GAA and .922 save percentage in nine playoff games. He needs to keep putting up strong numbers with Arizona suddenly deep in goalie prospects. Hunter Miska, Merrick Madsen and Sean Maguire are just a few of the other goalie prospects making their way up the organization and Hill will have to keep playing well to stay ahead of them. Still seems at least a few years away from full-time NHL duty especially with Raanta signed for four more years and Darcy Kuemper signed for two, but both have seen issues with injuries over the years, so Hill should get a spot start from time to time."

One week after signing a three-year, one-way extension with the team, Charlie Lindgren has been recalled by the Montreal Canadiens a day after Carey Price took a slap shot to the head in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Price remained in the game, was not pulled by league concussion spotters and showed no ill signs after quickly removing his mask and talking to the team medical staff. He did not practice and the Canadiens still haven’t declared any injury to Price but announced Lindgren as an emergency call-up. The 24-year-old displayed his talent over the first five games allowing just seven goals and going 3-1-1. But the lack of support got the best of him (as it has everyone else in red, white and blue) and he eventually gave way allowing 12 goals over his next three games, dropping all decisions in regulation time. The situation isn’t so different in Laval, so the numbers aren’t flashy but he keeps the team competitive. If Price were to miss any time Antti Niemi would take over as the starter, but with the Habs well out of the playoff race Lindgren will surely steal some starts." - Mike Barrett, February 2018.

Pickard signed a two year contract with the Avalanche at a price point just over 1 million per season – indicating that he has finally secured his role as a full time backup in Colorado. He has earned this spot with solid play when called up over the last few seasons, and has gotten hot enough in those times that stealing starts from Varlamov is a real possibility. Vanacek’s AHL season has once again been consistent, but also different than his consistent previous season. This season when he is good he is good, but when he is bad he is awful. He does not possess as much upside as Gillies but if he can show that his composure is more reliable for spot starts, he might find himself as the full time backup. Campbell looks ready to take the next step towards the NHL and is the leading horse in this race for the backup role in LA, at least for the beginning of the 2018-19 campaign. With save percentages of .912 (26 games) in the AHL and .924 (5 games) in the NHL last season, the numbers are there for the 26 year old to have a legitimate shot at being Jonathan Quick’s second. Georgiev was the mid-season beneficiary of the Rangers’ goaltending woes and took a happy advantage of his opportunity with the Blueshirts. In a ten-game spot-start audition alongside The King, he proved to be a competent backstop, and potential bridge to the Rangers future. Igor Shesterkin has long been foreseen as the heir to Hendrik Lundqvist, and though his development has been steady, the Rangers would be wise to make the transition more seamless by bridging the gap with an internal fix. Georgiev appears poised to sit in a ball-cap for the better part of the 2018-19 campaign, potentially starting between 20 and 30 NHL games. The deal should work well for both parties which will give the soon-to-be sophomore an opportunity to prove he is worthy of more than a pure backup role in the NHL. In the unexpected case that the Rangers do make a move on the free-agent goalie market, the waiver’s-exempt 22-year-old will be relegated to the Wolfpack for a year of development. It really hasn’t been the start that Gillies has hoped for. Stockton has been giving up a ton of quality scoring opportunities and thus Gillies numbers don’t look great to begin the campaign. (Five games – 4.53GAA, 0.858s%) At this point though, Parsons numbers are even worse, so it gives some context. Gillies has been struggling a bit with his glove hand and also continues to work on his positioning and calming his movements. Rittich has been playing fine enough to make Gillies spend more time in Stockton. It was close between them in training camp. Statistically, it was another brilliant season for Sorokin. Though his .931 save percentage is nothing to sneeze at, it only ranks 10th in the KHL – as only one regular goalie in the league has a save percentage below .920. He did boast a razor-thin 1.59 GAA (third best) and eight white washings (second best) and was nominated as an all-star in the league. He continued his fine play into the postseason as well – of the 12 total shutouts in the KHL playoffs, Sorokin authored five of them. CSKA made it to the Gagarin Cup Final before falling short to Ak Bars Kazan in five games. Sorokin remains a high-upside, very athletic goaltender. There’s still some work to do with this positioning and losing his net, as well as his glove mechanics. He doesn’t play the game with his feet set very much, which can leave goalies vulnerable to leaky goals. He has time to hone his skills, as he is stuck in the KHL through 2020. " Korpisalo saw rare back-to-back NHL starts this past week with top CBJ netminder Sergei Bobrovsky missing time due to illness. He netted two wins as well, holding the high-powered Vegas squad to just one goal and prevailing in a high-scoring overtime affair, yielding four goals to Colorado two nights later. In 14 starts he has put up some ugly peripherals (3.19 GAA , .902 SV%) yet managed a 7-7-0 record while being used sporadically. " - Kevin Wickersham, March 2018.

" Expectations are high for this third round pick from the 2016 draft. At 19, Woll is a young goalie with good size and tons of potential. He is now in his second year with Boston College and doing well if not spectacular with a 0.908 save percentage. He will likely be in the net for the US team at this year’s World Juniors. How he does in that tournament will provide just where he fits in on the goalie depth chart for Leafs. With Sparks and Picard playing so well it is likely Woll stays with Boston College for at least another year and perhaps two which would be his senior year with Boston College. " After a strong start to his WHL career, including a .920 sv% in 2015-16, Skinner has seen his numbers decline in each of the last two years. Prior to being traded to the Swift Current Broncos on January ninth, the young goaltender posted a lacklustre 3.38 gaa and a 0.897 sv% in 31 games for Lethbridge. After the trade to arguably the WHL‘s top team, Skinner posted an improved 2.68 gaa and a 0.914 sv% in 25 games. He followed the season up with a 2.20 gaa and 0.932 sv% in the WHL playoffs while backstopping the Broncos to their first WHL championship in 25 years. At 6-4 and 200 pounds, the Edmonton native has the size that every team wants in a goaltender. His numbers with the Broncos are undoubtedly impressive but there is concern on whether or not he is a product of playing on such a strong team. Regardless, the Oilers have to be hoping that they can groom Skinner to be their goaltender of the future. It‘s important to note that the Oilers haven‘t developed an NHL goaltender since they drafted Devan Dubnyk 14th overall in 2004. " - Jameson Ewasiuk, June 2018.
